Oscar Oscar Salons redefines luxury this week, as the iconic Pacific Fair salon celebrates its 15th anniversary with the unveiling of a sleek new salon as part of Pacific Fair’s $670million redevelopment.

Relocating from its upper floor address near Myer to a brand new salon in the glamorous West Mall precinct of the Centre – already dubbed the Gold Coast’s version of New York’s 5th Avenue – the 24-chair salon will feature a luxurious fit out complete with six-star finishes and the famous Oscar Oscar ‘retreat’ basin area - taking the renowned Oscar Oscar Salon experience to another level of luxury.

Commenting on the opening, Oscar Cullinan, Owner and Director of Oscar Oscar Salons, said the new store is another chapter in the successful history he shares with Pacific Fair.

“Pacific Fair was the first salon we opened on the Gold Coast in 2001 and we are thrilled to reset the benchmark we set 15 years ago for a luxurious hairdressing experience using only the very best products and specialising in creative cutting and colouring techniques,” said Oscar.

“As one of the centre’s longest standing retailers, we really look forward to offering our existing guests, some of whom have been coming to the Pacific Fair Salon for 15 years, a new world-class luxury salon experience, but we also anticipate to welcome a new wave of local, interstate and international visitors too.”

Positioned in the new high fashion precinct of Pacific Fair that will be home to brands also synonymous with style, including Sass & Bide, Manning Cartell and Gorman, salon guests will enjoy the added convenience of fusing shopping with the ultimate hair experience.

Combining opulence with an intimate setting and state-of-the-art soft lighting, Oscar Oscar Pacific Fair boasts a relaxed ambience and myriad premium haircare products from prestigious brands Kerastase Paris, Shu Uemura, and Aveda, hair colour by Redken NYC and the very best styling tools from GHD.

The trademark Oscar Oscar Salon VIP touches, such as in-salon massage ‘rituals’, indulgent professional use hair ‘ceremonies’ ensuring a bespoke luxury hair treatment for every guest, plus the signature refreshment menu will ensure each guest receives the ultimate pampering experience during each and every visit.

Oscar Oscar Pacific Fair will be open from 9am to 5.30pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday; 9am to 9pm on Thursdays; and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.

The weather may be cooling down, but the newest hair trends forecast for this season are nothing but hot, hot, hot! Leading hair stylist Jacky Chan and Redken colour expert Nathan Armagnacq - both Salon Partners of St Kilda and Chadstone’s Oscar Oscar Salons - lift the lid on the hottest hair trends for the cooler seasons.

TREND 1: Statement fringes

“Autumn and winter this year is all about the statement fringe, whether it be an edgy blunt style or a Brigitte Bardot-esque grown out fringe, which can be worn with a centre part, or swept to the side for a natural-looking side fringe that compliments most face shapes,” says Jacky.

TREND 2: Short is here to stay

Forget growing your hair out this season, the bob and lob are here to stay. Jacky says, “Take cues from celebrities like Taylor Swift and Jennifer Lawrence, and opt for a versatile shorter look which requires minimal effort while still looking sleek, sexy and stylish.”

TREND 3: Colour me Ronze

Move over ‘Bronde’, ‘Ronze is the edgy new shade on the block. “Following on from the bronde trend, made famous by celebrities like Blake Lively and Jennifer Lopez, Ronze is a mixture of luxurious coppery reds and gorgeous bronze browns, which add amazing texture and shimmer to hair,” says Nathan.

“Think warm tones: buttery and coral blondes, creamy chestnuts, rich reds and coppers. Those going Ronze should also invest in colour preserving products, which maintain hair tone, helping to preserve colour for a high gloss finish.”

TREND 4: The new Ombre

Tired of Ombre? Nathan recommends updating your look with ‘tortoiseshell’, a beautiful blend of chocolate and honey tones applied throughout the hair in a balayage, free-hand technique for a softer, blended finish. Popular among celebrities like Gisele Bündchen and Sofía Vergara. “This is the perfect look for brunettes wanting a rich, on-trend colour with plenty of dimension throughout the hair.”

TREND 5: Strobing style

Strobing isn’t just a term used in the makeup world anymore as Nathan predicts the hair strobing technique to really take off this season. “Hair strobing is a colouring technique where dark and light colours are applied side by side in the hair making it appear fuller and more dimensional. It’s like make-up contouring, but for hair,” says Nathan.

TREND 6: Blonde ambition for boys…

Bieber and model of the moment Lucky Blue are leading the boy pack with this season’s must have male look - bleach blonde hair. “Think Scandinavian, grey and icy blondes for this look,” Jacky suggests. “Experimental bold colours will also be on the rise amongst trend-savvy guys looking for a unique edge.”

Australia’s largest hairdressing award program, the Australian Hair Fashion Awards (AHFA), has announced Oscar Oscar Salons’ Melbourne-based stylist Steffi Tanian as the 2016 Newcomer of the Year.

Judged by a panel of renowned international industry experts, the AHFA (now in its 24th year) receives hundreds of entries each year from Australia’s hairdressing elite, and last night brought together the industry’s best for the annual awards gala event, which was held at Sydney’s iconic Luna Park.

Adding another trophy to her collection, Steffi, who has been named as an AHFA winner twice previously, now adds another win to her shining hairdressing portfolio – an impressive feat for the 23-year-old senior stylist of Oscar Oscar Salons Highpoint, Melbourne.

“I have found such a fantastic support network within the Oscar Oscar Salons team and they’ve provided me with the foundation, education and encouragement to foster my career but also challenge my abilities, which has positioned me where I am today.”

With deep-rooted passions in editorial and catwalk styling, Steffi is known for producing intricate and creative colour work on a day-to-day basis with her winning photography collection – the beautifully named ‘Odette’ – a true indication of Steffi’s exceptional talent.

Drawing inspiration from the elegance and fragility of the feminine role as portrayed in the classical ballet, the ‘Odette’ photographic collection aims to create a juxtaposition between the ethereal women and gentle form of ballet and the decay that lies beneath… the flaws in the character - just as it’s portrayed in the Odette story.

“Tight twists leading into a billowing ponytail, hair weaved tightly into itself then pulled apart to create an undone texture, small loops of hair separated by hand to produce a whimsical, fly-away effect, were all methods I employed with my ‘Odette’ collection,” explains Steffi.

Blending precision cutting and colouring with relaxed, natural styling, the ‘Dirge’ photographic collection, by Shantelle Neate from Oscar Oscar Highpoint, is a coming together of high fashion with a do-it-yourself attitude.

Classic masculine foundations underpin this collection as Shantelle looked to the eclectic street fashion trends of Melbourne's coolest suburbs to reinvent the ideal of masculinity in her work.

This bold collection is currently a finalist in the 2016 Australian Hair Fashion Awards, Men's Hairdresser of the Year category.

Ultra-glamorous, voluptuous styling blended with on-trend colour, shape and texture makes up the visually engaging ‘A Priori’, a photographic collection by Jacky Chan, from Oscar Oscar Chadstone & St Kilda.

Jacky’s collection was inspired by the sensational and provocative era of the nineties. A time where supermodels reigned supreme and fashion designers such as Versace were dressing A-listers like Liz Hurley in barely there dresses held together by safety pins. The word ‘de jour’ was ‘whatever’ and grunge bands with a new sound set the soundtrack to a new generation.

This visually captivating collection is currently a finalist in the 2016 Australian Hair Fashion Awards, VIC Hairdresser of the Year category.

It's a braid, but not as you know it! Follow Aveda Guest Artist, Jon Reyman's, easy step by step guide to re-create his NYFW Cobra braid.

Reflecting a Parisian elegance, the Autumn/Winter 2016 Leanne Marshall collection honed in on the strength and beauty of a worldly woman on a continuous quest for more knowledge. To complement the clothes, Aveda Guest Artist Jon Reyman created an intricately knotted braid based on the macramé cobra knot.

“By employing a traditional macramé stitch technique, we’ve created a beautifully strong style that speaks to the feminine aesthetic of the clothes, while conveying the message of vigor,” Reyman said.

Steps to the Look

Step 1: Prep hair by blow drying with Aveda Thickening Tonic (RRP $39.00).

Step 2: Create a center part and then divide hair into three sections. Secure the middle section into a ponytail at the nape of the neck.

Step 3: Taking the left section, make a loop and bring over the ponytail base and under the right section. While holding this formation in place, take the right section under pony base and through the loop on the left side. Tighten together to make a knot.

Step 4: Begin the above process again, but now starting with the right section; keep each knotted section taut as you continue this pattern until the right and left sections are at the ends. Tuck the ends under the pony base and secure with two pins.

Step 5: Set with Control Force™ Firm Hold Hair Spray (RRP $44.95)

Why is it that our hair always feels lighter than air, soft and squeaky clean after a visit to the salon? Is it the product our stylist uses, or something to do with how our hair is washed?

We asked Jessica Longhurst, Salon Partner & Artistic Director at Oscar Oscar Robina, to share her fool-proof guide for the perfect home hair wash.

DETANGLE YOUR HAIR before getting in the shower. Tangled/knotted locks make it more difficult to massage your scalp and rinse out product. Try brushing with an Aveda Wooden Paddle Brush (RRP $49.95) prior to showering to get your tresses in order.

2.Once in the shower, SATURATE YOUR HAIR from root to tip with warm water before applying any product. This will help open the hair cuticles, allowing your hair to absorb the nutrients in your shampoo and conditioner.

3.DON’T USE TOO MUCH PRODUCT. For each shampoo, you only need around a 50 cent coin worth of product to thoroughly cleanse your hair. More product doesn't automatically equal a better result. If your lather is weak, add more water and keep working it.

    4. ALWAYS SHAMPOO TWICE. The first shampoo works to remove any oil and product build-up from the hair strand. Your second application provides an additional cleanse plus it allows the benefits of your chosen product to take effect (eg: add extra volume, shine or repairing proteins)

    5. OPT FOR GENTLE PRESSURE when massaging shampoo into your hair, particularly around the roots. Use the tips of your fingers, rather than your nails and don’t scrub too harshly as friction can permanently damage your hair’s cuticle, leading to unwanted breakage and frizz.

6.CONCENTRATE ON YOUR SCALP. This is where natural oils are produced and therefore your scalp tends to require a little extra TLC. If you find your scalp tends to be oily, consider using a balancing shampoo such as Aveda Scalp Benefits (RRP $32) which helps remove excess sebum creating the ideal foundation for healthy hair.

7.RINSE THOROUGHLY AFTER SHAMPOOING until your hair feels squeaky clean. Squeeze all excess water out of the hair before applying your conditioner or masque to allow for better absorptcion of product.

8.CONDITION YOUR HAIR using a 50 cent coin worth of product. Only apply to your mid-lengths and ends (your ponytail area), avoiding the roots. Leave on for a few minutes to maximize results. Once a week, substitute your conditioner for a masque treatment such the Aveda Dry Remedy Moisturizing Masque (RRP $55) for an extra boost of nourishment.

9.RINSE WITH COOL WATER to help seal your cuticles. Ensure there is no product left in your hair and that the water is running clear into the drain. If you see suds, keep rinsing!

10.Remember, DON’T OVER-WASH YOUR HAIR. Three or four times a week is sufficient for most hair types. Use a dry shampoo like the Aveda Shampure Dry Shampoo (RRP $30) to extend that clean sensation on non-wash days!

We love it when Hollywood A-listers turn heads for all the right reasons, rocking new cool platinum blonde shades and short, blunt-cut bobs for the holiday season. We’re currently coveting Nicole Richie’s new style, a seamless transition from the warm golden blonde of mid-2015.

“Nicole is right on trend with this new look, golden blonde to a flawless platinum and chic bob style-cut” says Oscar Cullinan, Owner and Director of Oscar Oscar Salons.

“The blunt bob is back on trend this summer as it is easily maintained and looks more high-end than its longer counterpart – the lob. Ideal for fine to medium hair lengths, this cut is quite versatile and can be styled to suit any occasion.”

“To achieve Nicole’s icy platinum, I would recommend doing a full head of fine micro-foils using the new Blonde Idol colour palette by Redken. This exciting addition to the Redken Colour range, enables us to produce brighter, cleaner blondes all in one sitting, and customize the perfect tone for every guest.”

  1. Just like with your makeup, it is important to prime your hair before styling. Apply a few sprays of Shu Uemura’s WONDER WORKER Blow Dry Perfector to towel dried hair to prepare your hair for heat styling.
  2. Work the product through with your fingers and comb into a side deep part using a tail comb.
  3. Blow-dry straight to create a sleek and smooth finish. Hot tip: Use a paddle brush to help stretch the root of your hair in any and every direction, creating lift and smoothing the hair follicle as you go.
  4. Nicole has a little texture in her hair, which can be added using Shu Uemura TEXTURE WAVE Dry Finishing Spray. This product leaves the hair with a soft, matte finish and offers buildable texture with a long-lasting flexible hold.
  5. Tuck one side behind the ear and apply a small amount of Shu Uemura TOUCH OF GLOSS Brilliant Styling Balm to combat fly-aways, leaving the hair with smooth with subtle shine.

Lead the field - Spring Racing Fashion Guide

Posted on 29TH OCTOBER 2015

Off to the races? How short is too short for your hemline? Should you match your bag with your shoes? How do you style your hair to work with your millinery?

With Melbourne Cup day fast approaching, we interviewed fashion/lifestyle blogger and local Melbourne fashionista Margot Moore (@margotmoore), to help navigate the trends this racing season, ensuring you avoid any fashion faux pas whilst trackside!

Simple, elegant and structured dresses that are mid length (always below the knee!). Also, lots of metallics and lace for millinery and accessories.

A day at the races is a big commitment. Not only is it an early start, but being outside all day in heels can also be quite painful. The best thing you can do is be prepared for a long day and make sure you are equipped for comfort. Try to wear in your shoes beforehand, if you plan on wearing new heels and get 'party-feet' or gel inserts for your shoes. They will give you a few extra hours of comfort before that burning feeling sets in. As a back up, pack bandaids!

Fashion-wise, it's important to research the themes for each race day beforehand and always adhere to them; for example Derby Day is strictly black and white, and a spot of yellow on cup day is customary. Make sure you get your hair professionally done. Spring Racing is all about beautiful hats and fascinators. Your hair should work seemlessly with your head piece, not detract from it.

As for what not to do, NEVER take your shoes off! You should try and find heels that are good mix of comfortable and fashionable, so try to stay away from a stiletto heel unless it's under 10cm. Don't do your makeup in bad lighting. Remember this is a daytime event, so it's important to get your makeup right for sunlight. Also, attending the races without some kind of headpiece is a major fashion faux pas!

For hair, I would always try to do something with a lot of structure and hold. You want your hair to stay put for the entire day, and quite often, the weather is not great here in Melbourne, so you have to be prepared for rain, hail or shine. Getting your hair professionally done, means that you'll get that long lasting hold, and it will just complete your outfit. I love a sleek and sexy up-do for the races. Jacky Chan, from Oscar Oscar Salons St Kilda, has been creating some beautiful styles for me this racing season. From soft glamour waves to a sleek low bun, these styles have helped really tie my race day look together.

In terms of makeup, you need to find that perfect combination of long lasting makeup that also looks appropriate for a day time event. I find you can achieve this by steering clear of over-the-top eye make-up (little to no eyeliner on the bottom), a natural looking false lash and a bright lip.

For millinery, I LOVE to support local milliners. They are so incredibly talented, and I cannot imagine how much time goes into making fascinators and hats. My favourite thing to do is get a bespoke piece made specifically for a dress. I have to admit that I avoid purchasing generic pieces from department stores at all costs. Millinery can be quite expensive, but these days you can hire amazing bespoke pieces from many dress rental companies which is an economical way to go about it! This year I have worn pieces by Heather McDowall and Allport Millinery (by Sophie Allport).

As I said above - bandaids! Also, a compact mirror, powder, lipstick and an iPhone charger are always standard handbag requirements. Make sure your clutch is large enough to fit the essentials and complimentary to the tones in your outfit.

I got really lucky last year and managed to place my bets on 'The Protectionist'. This year I have not been having much luck with punting at all! I'm going to say 'Who Shot Thebarman' or 'Preferment' - but please do not take any punting tips from me!

For the perfect race day styling tip, secure an appointment with Jacky or a member of the St Kilda Oscar Oscar team,

Trend to try - 'The Reverse Shampoo'

Posted on 16TH OCTOBER 2015

It sounds a little backwards, but reverse shampooing is a new trend when it comes to home haircare routines. It offers a resolution for those of us with fine, dry hair, who find that daily conditioners are far to heavy and weigh down our hair.

The 'reverse shampoo' trend hit the spotlight In early 2015, with many salons and product companies offering solutions for guests with thin, damaged hair. Owner and Director of Oscar Oscar Salons, Oscar Cullinan, takes us through the benefits of switching up your shampoo before conditioner regime.

“Hydrating the hair first with a conditioning product helps protect and seal all fragile ends, minimising further breakage” explains Oscar. "Shampooing second, cleanses all traces of conditioner, leaving the hair soft, weightless and free of any residue. The reverse shampoo technique is perfect for those of us with ultra fine, damaged hair, as it boosts body and volume after just one wash."

"To try at home, wet hair thoroughly, then work in your Soin Premier Therapiste (an innovative pre-shampoo conditioner) remembering to avoid the scalp area. Leave hair for five to ten minutes allowing the conditioner to penetrate deep into the hair follicle and nourish from within. Rinse out the conditioner and apply your Bain Therapiste (shampoo), massaging the scalp to gently exfoliate and cleanse any excess product. Before blow-drying, finish with Kerastase Dual Serum Therapiste, a must have product that helps to further repair and bind ends.”

Ask your stylist about the Kerastase Therapiste reverse shampooing technique when next in salon, and receive your own home hair care prescription.

With warmer weather just around the corner you’ve probably started planning towards getting yourself fit and fabulous for that amazing bikini you’ve had your eye on. Your checklist probably includes updating your gym membership, reviewing green juice recipes, exfoliating like it’s nobody’s business and booking in for some spray tans. Before you launch into your new season health and fitness regime, consider also incorporating a summer hair boot camp!

Winter’s notorious for traumatizing our skin and hair, thanks to the drop in temperature, constant exposure to artificial indoor heat, hot showers and of course some daily abuse from our hair styling irons.

Being proactive about the health of your hair is easier than you think. We consulted Artistic & Technical Director, Jayne Pausina from Oscar Oscar Salons Carindale, for some personal training tips to whip your hair back into shape by summer!

Coming out of winter, a dry or flaky scalp can represent a PH imbalance or sensitivity to a shampoo you may be using. “I recommend using ‘The Gommage’, part of the Kerastase Chronologiste range, to balance your scalp pre-shampoo,” says Jayne. “It’s a micro-fine scrub that purifies and stimulates the scalp and hair fibre through gentle exfoliation, resulting in deep nourishment and radiant shine.”

Like any good workout, preparation is key. ”It’s imperative that you prepare your scalp and hair properly or you won’t get the results you’re after.

We’ve all heard about the importance of guzzling some H2O before our morning run, and just like our body, our hair can be susceptible to dehydration if it is not getting the proper nourishment it requires.

“Consider adding an intense hydrating masque and a good quality oil into your haircare routine. Both of these products will provide nutrition and moisture, whilst protecting your ends from drying out. The right oil makes your hair soft to the touch and provides UV protection, something we often forget about during winter.” Jayne’s go-to products for keeping hair hydrated and nourished are Kerastase’s Nutrive Masquintence and Elixir Ultimate Multi-Use Oil.

“The new season is the perfect time to consider a makeover or style update,” says Jayne. If you don’t know where to find inspiration, consulting an expert can help get you back on track with some original ideas, as well as get you excited for the new you!”

For those seeking a change, Jayne recommends some soft, natural micro-foils or a beautiful balayage to create that sun kissed look everyone is craving. Go bold, and lose that winter weight with a new style cut such as a classic textured bob, an airy fringe or some tapered layering.

Everyone experiences the occasional slump in motivation when beginning a new health or fitness regime, and it’s easy to fall back into the habit of neglecting our hair. Don’t let all your hard work go to waste!

“The key to perpetually glamorous hair is dedicating just a few minutes to it a day”. Invest in a regular gloss, blow-wave and treatment in salon, to also ensure your hair stays fresh and fabulous all summer long.

Second Day Hair Survival Guide

Posted on 7TH SEPTEMBER 2015

You left the salon rocking a fabulous blow-wave, but now it's day two and your facing a disheveled hair dilemma! Before you reach for the dry-shampoo or heat-styler, take a deep breath because we've got you covered!

If you’re anything like us, you’ll want to prolong your salon blow-wave for as long as possible. We had a chat with two of our expert stylists, Emma and Sarah from Oscar Oscar Garden City, regarding their go-to styles for second day hair.

The Textured Ponytail

Sweeping your hair back the day after a beautiful blow-wave can help maintain the overall look, all the while keeping those pesky fly-aways under control.

  1. The key to this look is lots of volume, so begin by teasing the roots with a Shu Uemura Volume Maker Brush. This will amplify the hairline whilst preserving the natural texture of your hair.
  2. Gently brush out last night’s curls and smooth into a high ponytail. Secure with a hair-band and bobby pins where needed.
  3. Apply a few sprays of Shu Uemura Liquid Fabric throughout the ponytail and work it through with fingertips. Liquid Fabric works similarly to a sea-salt spray, adding workable texture, and giving the appearance of a thicker, fuller looking head of hair.

The Twist Braid

The twist braid is the perfect look for those prone to an oily scalp, as it helps refresh your style from the day before, whilst drawing the attention away from a rebellious fringe or part-line.

  1. Prepare your hair with Shu Uemura Texture Wave, applying directly to the root and brushing any excess through to the ends. Texture Wave has a light powder formula, which helps to mask the look of unwashed hair.
  2. Part your hair to one side, then take a small section of hair from the front and twist back towards your ear.
  3. Repeat the last step, adding more small sections as you make your way across the hairline. Once finished, secure the end of your twisted braid with a bobby pin.
  4. Finish by applying a few pumps of Shu Uemura Essence Absolute Oil, to smooth and add shine to your mid-lengths and ends.

Introducing the new member of the Kerastase Resistance collection: Therapiste, designed for ultra-fine, ultra-processed and ultra-damaged hair. The Therapiste range rebuilds the internal substance of hair weakened by chemical or mechanical agressions, restoring its strength and condition. A must have for chemically lightened blondes and balayages, and those of us addicted to our styling irons.

This revolutionary new formula harnesses the regenerative properties of the resurrection plant Myrothamnus Flabellifolius, a flowering shrub found throughout Madagascar and South Africa. This plant can survive incredibly dry weather conditions and come back to life after an incubation time of up to ten years. Together with Kerastase’s Fibra-KAP technology it works to restore the micro proteins that link and bond keratin together in the hair.

This truly customised beauty ritual includes a unique Soin Premier, a pre-shampoo conditioning treatment suitable for extremely fine hair in need of a little extra strength and nourishment.

In addition, the Dual Serum is a prescriptive treatment for use on dry and splitting ends. This serum protects the hair from heating tools up to 230° leaves hair feeling soft and reinforced. Split ends are sealed and blow-drying time is cut in half.

Begin your hair therapy now with a voucher for 20% off the collection, for a limited time only. Simply register your details at Start My Hair Therapy and start confessing your hair sins! Coupons can be redeemed in all Oscar Oscar Salons until the 5th of October 2015.
