5 Simple Fascinators for Spring Racing

Posted on 21ST OCTOBER 2016

The Spring Racing Carnival is well and truly upon us and we know just how hard it can be to find the perfect fascinator... So, to save you some time, we have hand-picked our favourite, simple fascinator styles to effortlessly pair with your favourite frock.

The Halo:

This look is incredibly simple but oh so elegant. Whether you decide on loose boho curls, a messy up-do, or sleek and straight, this accessory can easily be popped on top to transform any outfit to effortlessly angelic.

The Veil:

Whether your look is sultry or ultra-feminine, the veil is a timeless choice. For a simple option, wear the veil on its own or, to create more of statement, try a veil with additional accessories such as flowers, embroidery or jewels. If your look is more feminine, opt for either a flower or jewelled veil that stops just above the eyebrow line. Hot tip – try to find one on a headband, that way you don't have to worry about the fuss of pinning, simply sit it on top of your finished hairstyle.

The Mod-Tiara:

If you're looking to transform a feminine dress into a contemporary look, this ultra-chic take on the tiara is the answer. Although, this accessory can be easily added to any hair style, it is definitely the perfect partner for dead straight hair.

The Sunhat:

A favourite of Jen Hawkins, the wide brimmed sun hat is an extremely elegant, timeless choice. Paired with a monochromatic outfit and loose curls, this is sure to make a statement on race day.

The Flower Crown:

Good news for all the boho lovers out there… the flower crown is totally acceptable at the races! In fact, pair it with a pixie cut, a loose up-do or braids and a light summer frock and you'll nail Spring Racing with this bohemian look. If you're feeling a little more adventurous, you can of course, opt for a bigger, more colourful flower crown that matches your favourite spring-inspired dress.

The spring racing carnival is an incredibly exciting time in terms of fashion, so push the boundaries, be daring and really have some fun with your selections, and remember as we always outfit is complete without great hair! Enjoy xx

The weather may be cooling down, but the newest hair trends forecast for this season are nothing but hot, hot, hot! Leading hair stylist Jacky Chan and Redken colour expert Nathan Armagnacq - both Salon Partners of St Kilda and Chadstone’s Oscar Oscar Salons - lift the lid on the hottest hair trends for the cooler seasons.

TREND 1: Statement fringes

“Autumn and winter this year is all about the statement fringe, whether it be an edgy blunt style or a Brigitte Bardot-esque grown out fringe, which can be worn with a centre part, or swept to the side for a natural-looking side fringe that compliments most face shapes,” says Jacky.

TREND 2: Short is here to stay

Forget growing your hair out this season, the bob and lob are here to stay. Jacky says, “Take cues from celebrities like Taylor Swift and Jennifer Lawrence, and opt for a versatile shorter look which requires minimal effort while still looking sleek, sexy and stylish.”

TREND 3: Colour me Ronze

Move over ‘Bronde’, ‘Ronze is the edgy new shade on the block. “Following on from the bronde trend, made famous by celebrities like Blake Lively and Jennifer Lopez, Ronze is a mixture of luxurious coppery reds and gorgeous bronze browns, which add amazing texture and shimmer to hair,” says Nathan.

“Think warm tones: buttery and coral blondes, creamy chestnuts, rich reds and coppers. Those going Ronze should also invest in colour preserving products, which maintain hair tone, helping to preserve colour for a high gloss finish.”

TREND 4: The new Ombre

Tired of Ombre? Nathan recommends updating your look with ‘tortoiseshell’, a beautiful blend of chocolate and honey tones applied throughout the hair in a balayage, free-hand technique for a softer, blended finish. Popular among celebrities like Gisele Bündchen and Sofía Vergara. “This is the perfect look for brunettes wanting a rich, on-trend colour with plenty of dimension throughout the hair.”

TREND 5: Strobing style

Strobing isn’t just a term used in the makeup world anymore as Nathan predicts the hair strobing technique to really take off this season. “Hair strobing is a colouring technique where dark and light colours are applied side by side in the hair making it appear fuller and more dimensional. It’s like make-up contouring, but for hair,” says Nathan.

TREND 6: Blonde ambition for boys…

Bieber and model of the moment Lucky Blue are leading the boy pack with this season’s must have male look - bleach blonde hair. “Think Scandinavian, grey and icy blondes for this look,” Jacky suggests. “Experimental bold colours will also be on the rise amongst trend-savvy guys looking for a unique edge.”

Trend to try - 'The Reverse Shampoo'

Posted on 16TH OCTOBER 2015

It sounds a little backwards, but reverse shampooing is a new trend when it comes to home haircare routines. It offers a resolution for those of us with fine, dry hair, who find that daily conditioners are far to heavy and weigh down our hair.

The 'reverse shampoo' trend hit the spotlight In early 2015, with many salons and product companies offering solutions for guests with thin, damaged hair. Owner and Director of Oscar Oscar Salons, Oscar Cullinan, takes us through the benefits of switching up your shampoo before conditioner regime.

“Hydrating the hair first with a conditioning product helps protect and seal all fragile ends, minimising further breakage” explains Oscar. "Shampooing second, cleanses all traces of conditioner, leaving the hair soft, weightless and free of any residue. The reverse shampoo technique is perfect for those of us with ultra fine, damaged hair, as it boosts body and volume after just one wash."

"To try at home, wet hair thoroughly, then work in your Soin Premier Therapiste (an innovative pre-shampoo conditioner) remembering to avoid the scalp area. Leave hair for five to ten minutes allowing the conditioner to penetrate deep into the hair follicle and nourish from within. Rinse out the conditioner and apply your Bain Therapiste (shampoo), massaging the scalp to gently exfoliate and cleanse any excess product. Before blow-drying, finish with Kerastase Dual Serum Therapiste, a must have product that helps to further repair and bind ends.”

Ask your stylist about the Kerastase Therapiste reverse shampooing technique when next in salon, and receive your own home hair care prescription.

Braiding: fresh from the runway

Posted on 1ST JULY 2015

It's official, the traditional schoolyard braid has transitioned from the playground to the runway. We spoke with our braiding expert Julie Vranic from Oscar Oscar Southland, to get the low-down on this season's most sought after looks!

Skeletal French Braid
"Diane Kruger's skeletal french braid is simply genius! Cornrow down the centre of the head, then pull sides of hair into a loose french braid over the cornrow with a little window left at the top so that the cornrow is peeking through. Keep the hair smooth, as this style does not need extra texture added!"

Textured Fishtail
"For all the long-haired ladies out there, who are having trouble styling their manes, the textured fishtail braid is about to become your new best friend. Gather hair into a high pony, and tease for extra thickness, then proceed to fishtail down the pony. As seen in the pic below, Audrina Patridge has extra hair pulled from the braid to create maximum texture for a chic yet effortless look."

The Bohemian Upstyle
"It's Friday night and there is no time to wash your hair - DON'T WORRY! Simply: tease, braid, and pin! Julianne Hough wears the braid relatively smoothly in this image, however do not be afraid to get messy with this style!"

Crown Heart Braid with Bow
"I love creating new and intricate braids in Salon! This is a modern take on the up-style, perfect for formal events. The heart shape braid brings a touch of romance into the design, contrasted with the simple middle part and delicate bangs at the front. This look can also be achieved when the hair is worn down, for a softer end result."

To achieve the perfect braid, and to maximise texture and volume, Oscar Oscar Salons uses Kerastase's Matérialiste all-over thickening spray gel. The diameter of each fibre is immediately expanded, resulting in visibly & tactilely fuller, denser hair matter. Hair is weightlessly texturised, easier to style, yet retains its cosmetic touch and allure.

Festival season is heating up around the country, flooding our social media feeds with beautiful braids, luscious natural bo-ho waves and, celeb inspired styling.

We asked Oscar Oscar Paddington's Technical and Artistic Director, Michael Kelly, for his top 5 looks from Coachella 2015 to ensure you're festival ready this season!

Kate Bosworth - Coachella Style Queen
Kate’s colour is a beautiful baby butter-blonde, with balayage. The front of the fringe is then corn rowed down the centre of her head, becoming almost an accessory in the hair! Complementing this look is a simple white dress topped with a lace and linen crop jacket. Bosworth takes the prize of Coachella style queen in my mind, as her look is very unique and also, effortlessly cool."

Gigi Hadid - Galactic Girl
Gigi’s signature tousled beach waves were on display at this year’s Coachella! Her surfer- girl vibe was further enhanced by her dark re-growth. and melted blonde caramel tones. Whilst her makeup is minimal, the facial jewellery completes the look, and provides a galactic warrior vibe!"

Marina of 'Marina and the Diamonds' - Fiercely Retro
"What I love about Marina’s look here, is that her hair is undone and naturally textured! Natural flowing hair works works for this look, considering how retro-glam the rest of her outfit is. A lot of people tend to think that the ideal festival hair length is long and flowing, however Marina proves that shoulder length hair can look just as fierce, if not more! Team this look with some high reflective cat eye glasses, and you literally can't go wrong!"

Kylie Jenner - Braided Beauty
"Reviewing all of Kylie Jenner’s Coachella looks, this is my absolute favourite! Kylie rocks Mahican braids with a soft natural hairline, accessorized with white hair paint! Surprisingly, this look is fairly easy to achieve, and remember the more texture added, the better! Kylie completes the look with a thin white ribbon wound around the bottom of her plait. This look is extremely creative, but at the same time, achievable!"

Bella Thorne - Festival Angel
"Thorne's look is extremely classy, with her gorgeous Victoria's Secret-esque hair, she just looks angelic! A simple middle part, paired with a vivacious hair colour completes the look. Don't be afraid to trial a different hair colour around festival season! It can be a great excuse to experiment with a colour you would otherwise not think of trying! Make sure you consult a stylist before making the bold move, as we can help prescribe the right colours and tones to suit your skin, for the best result."

Ever wondered how to have perfect beach goddess hair all summer long? Oscar Oscar Robina salon partner and Gold Coast local, Jess Longhurst, shares some words of wisdom when it comes to warding off frizzy ends and faded colour this summer season.

What are the most common problems you see in the Salon during Summer?

Excessive sun exposure and salt always creates problems, especially if you’re already prone to split ends. We tend to see a lot of colour fade as well as dry and brittle ends at this time of year.

How can blondes preserve their colour if spending lots of time at the beach or in the pool?

Protecting your hair, like you do your skin, is very important before you go in the water. Kerastase Micro-Voile Protecteur acts as a sunscreen for the hair. Just a decent spritz before you head out by the pool will help preserve your colour and stop it fading in the sun.

Also don't forget to rinse your hair in fresh water as soon as you can. Washing your hair with a cleaning shampoo such as Bain Apres-Soleil by Kerastase will help remove any chlorine as well as prevent those nasty green tones spoiling your beautiful blonde.

Which celebrity inspired hairstyle would you recommend this Summer season for being super easy to maintain?

Marianna Hewitt has summer hair to die for! This style is the perfect length for that effortless summer look. A medium length cut with a little texture through the ends, but with minimal layers, will help you achieve some beach inspired waves. This style can also easily be transformed into a glamorous evening look.

How can we best care for our hair at home in between our Salon visits?

Home haircare is really important. Making sure you are using a quality foundation product for your hair and scalp prescribed to you by your stylist is the first step. Regular treatments and priming products will help too.

Which hair care products are an absolute beach bag must have?

Shu Uemura - Depsea Moisture Foundation. It’s the perfect style refresher as it re-hydrates the hair leaving it with weightless texture.

Also Kerastase Spray-a- porta. This is tousled spray that can be used wet-to-dry to add texture to your blow-dry or you can spray onto dry hair to give it a sea salt relaxed feel.

For this seasons hottest hair colour trends you need to know the lingo… it’s all about balayage, ombré and micro-foiling. We talk to Michael Kelly, one of Australia’s top colourists and the head colourist of our Oscar Oscar Salon in Sydney, to get the low-down on this years hottest hair colouring techniques:

BALAYAGE: Balayage is a french term for freehand colouring. I love using this technique to create sun-kissed hair with individual style. This is best suited to people that want a really natural beach babe look, like our favourite bikini girl Lara Bingle!

Lara Binge Balayage Hair

OMBRÉ: Ombre is two-toned colouring and gives the hair a dip-dyed effect. This looks great with chocolate brown hair and caramel dip-dyed ends. Ombré colouring can be used for any colour variations such as blonde hair with pink ends, or even a beautiful blend of red and copper tones. This is an edgy colour look so you can be creative with your hair colour selection!

Sandra Bullock Ombre Hair Trend Colour

MICRO-FOILING: Micro-foiling is a technique for ultra-fine precision foiling which creates a seamless shimmer of colour throughout the hair. This is the is ultimate colouring technique for achieving an expensive looking blonde.
